Four Tips to Help You Feel Motivated

Ask yourself, “Is this something that I really want?”

In life, it’s far too easy to find ourselves doing something for the wrong reasons. Perhaps because we feel the need to live up to the expectations of others, or maybe because we’ve developed a case of the “supposed’tas” (i.e., that long laundry list of things everyone is “supposed’ta” do by a certain age, or in a certain order, or in a certain way…).  You get my drift. Whatever the case may be, it’ll be worth it for you to spend some time doing some good old fashioned soul searching, to avoid waking up 50 years from now and realizing someone else has been sailing your ship.

Surround yourself with like-minded people.

The coined phrase “birds of a feather…” isn’t new, but instills a good point. We are who we surround ourselves with. Energy can be contagious or repelling. That means you’ll either like what you see and jump on the bandwagon, or be turned off and run in the other direction. So find yourself a group of people or even one person who is serious about accomplishing their goals, and join forces. If you’re not sure where to start, get a life coach. Our job is to motivate, encourage, push, and validate. Without a doubt, we are the antidote to your inertia.

Get inspired.

Boredom is the kryptonite of motivation. There have been many periods in my life where I just couldn’t seem to muster up the energy or interest to do something, even if it was something I enjoyed. It wasn’t until I got creative and spiced things up, that I became motivated again. Doing the same ole’ over and over again will inevitably become taxing. So be open to and proactive about finding new ways to reinvent yourself, and that which you do most frequently. Something as small as a change of scenery, or a set of daily affirmations can do wonders.

Move beyond your feelings.

Lack of motivation is strongly correlated to our emotions. We don’t FEEL like doing something, or going somewhere, and in turn flake, cancel, or procrastinate. These outcomes don’t solve problems, however; in fact, they usually create them. So after implementing suggestions 1-3, it may be worth it to explore if something deeper is going on and address it accordingly. If after doing so, you come to the conclusion that it’s pretty much just a case of the lazies, shake it off, visualize yourself doing whatever needs to get done, imagine how you’ll feel during and after, and go about actually doing it!
Remember, thoughts turn into feelings and feelings turn into actions.
